Default Battery Pattern for Vivitar 283

I got two Vivitar 283s at a yard sale of a former newspaper photographer
(he's won a Pulitzer prize) I only paid $6 for BOTH of them. He says they
both work.

Thing is, they're missing the battery cases so I'm trying to figure out the
pattern the batteries go into the case. Also, what patterns the batteries
connect to each other. Or, am I going to be totally without if I don't just
get the case period?

You will have to contact Vivitar and order the holders or find a
camera shop that will have them..

You can still get the holders quite easily, and they aren't expensive:
Vivitar always sold them as 'accessories' rather than as 'spare parts'
because some people (me, for instance) liked to keep an extra one ready
filled with batteries for a quick change over.

The 4 batteries connect in series, to make 6 volts. That leaves only
the question of which of the two terminals in the flash (that the case
connects to) should be positive, and which should be negative. That I
*don't* know (closest I've got here is a 285).

Wasn't it Larry R Harrison Jr who said...

You could probably work out the pattern and fabricate a case for
the batteries, but the stock battery holder usually goes for
about $5 each. The holder works both in the 283 and the 285, so
if you see one for one flash, it'll work in the other.

Check KEH or e*ay - there are plenty out there.
