yep.

Yes it is.

i've received calls with clid saying it's my own phone number.

other times it has a bogus area code or an invalid number of digits or
it's all 0s or something else that's clearly bogus.

irrelevant. They gave me a number to call. It is the same number they
gave to a lot of other people.

so what?

block the calls and get on with life.

or, if you're really bored, have fun with them. i'm sure a lawyer would
enjoy someone calling claiming they're going to sue them.

If you don't have callerID, you should. If you do
have it you should never have picked up. Federal
agencies are bought out. Phone companies have
a monopoly racket going. Your only choice is to
simply not pick up unless you know who's calling.
doNotCall lists used to work, but haven't for some
time now. I'm guessing there was probably some
back room lobbying involved that we'll probably
never hear about.

That doesn't work for us in practice. Many calls we need are
from caller id blocked numbers.

the do not call list is not enforced due to lack of funding.

...and the most annoying of all are the never ending political lobby
and election season robo-calls.

These types of calls are not prohibited if you are on the "don not call
list". Who would have thought that politicians would exempt political
lobbying and fund raising types of calls?

I know the calls were an attempted scam. The IRS knows it too. (This
particular scam has been going on for over a year.)
The IRS says call the FCC, if I haven't given them my SS#. The FCC
says
the complaint should b filed with the FTC, which I did. Since the
scammers have given me a phone number to call and that telephone
number
is known to the FCC, FTC, and the IRS, how difficult is it to find
out
who is behind these criminal offenses.
Relation to digital photography - tenuous.

they have bigger fish to fry, or the calls originate outside their
jurisdiction and they can't do ****.

the solution is simply block the calls. after a while your number will
fall off the calling lists and number of spam calls drops
substantially.

Not so easy in some cases. Ever get scam calls from "Card Member
Services"? I get them daily on my home and cell phone. The number
shown that they are calling from is different every time.

that's true, but when other calls get a not in service message, your
number starts to fall off the lists they use, thereby drastically
reducing the number of calls. it won't stop all of them, but it's a
*huge* plus.

once again, put the numbers on a block list. once your number shows up
as invalid, it falls off the lists.

As usual you don't see the issue. This is a widespread nationwide
attempt to commit identity theft. If there was adequate enforcement
thousands of people would not have their identity compromised. This
isn't about me. I suffered no loss. It's about a failure of enforcement.

It does not. Indeed political calls, legitimate surveys, and charitable
solicitations are expressly permitted. Indeed last week I was solicited
by a charity, and we happily gave them a donation.

identity theft is nothing new and often originates *outside* the usa,
making it pretty much impossible to track down and punish, and even if
someone was able to do that, there's dozens more who will pop up behind
them trying the same thing (probably the same people).

it absolutely does.

Indeed political calls, legitimate surveys, and charitable
solicitations are expressly permitted.

it doesn't matter if the calls are permitted or not.

if someone calls a number and gets a not in service message, they don't
normally call again. the number is flagged which eventually filters up
to the master lists, thereby reducing the number of future solicitation
calls.

it's *very* effective.

Indeed last week I was solicited
by a charity, and we happily gave them a donation.

and?
