forgive my ignorance but is it possible to order a pc with all the
specs ,ram ,hd etc but no operating system then install linux ? would it
run cs4, lightroom etc ?

It is, indeed, possible. I've done it several times - though you have to
look. There are also some vendors who are actually brave enough to sell
Linux systems - last time I looked, DELL had a few. Another option: a
barebones system - they usually come without RAM or hard drive, but that
is certainly easy enough to install.

MS software will not run natively on Linux. If you search for WINE you
can find out what software will run via the WINE emulator. Other options:
you can always do a virtual machine within the Linux install. Or you can
see how native Linux softare works for you. GIMP is freely available. I
believe at one time there was a Linux version of lightroom available.

cs4 and lightroom do not run under linux. older versions of photoshop
sort of work with wine, but not all that well. if you want to run
adobe software, particularly current adobe software and not versions
from 5-10 years ago, you will need to get either windows or os x.

And using the computer will be slower from day one because you'll
have
to spend more time taking care of the OS.

With Linux? Are you kidding? One of the biggest advantages of Linux
over Windows is that you're not having to constantly tweak stuff to
keep it running at 100% efficiency.

So Linux has an autoupdate facility like Windows and OSX?

Who do you call for support on the particular version of linux you are
suggesting? I assume there is telephone support?

It's possible but odds are that it will be cheaper to just get a Windows box
and blow away the Windows.

If your objective is to run Adobe applications then running Linux and trying
to make them work under it is pointless--if it can be done at all you're
going to be spending more time mucking about making things that aren't
intended to work together function than you going to spend using the system.

Before you buy a new machine, two things to do:

1: Go to start/run/msconfig and look at what your system is starting up and
what it is running for services--google each to find out what they do and
disable any that you don't need.

2: Right click on the task bar, select "task manager", "performance", and
then compare the physical memory with the memory used. If you've got more
memory being used than the physical memory installed then add RAM as
required.

Yes it does. At least the versions I use (Ubuntu and Redhat) do.

Vast amount of support available for free online.
