Since 97% of people are right handed/right eyed, the left offset design
of 35mm cameras provided clearance to enabled you to look through the
viewfinder (whether SLR or rangefinder) continuously with your right eye
while simultaneously advancing the film with your right thumb via the
film advance lever on the top, right side of the body without poking your
eye out. Today's cameras just followed that original convention.

Certainly. That's why they can handle a right handed camera much better
than 'we' can handle a left handed one.

More like nine out of ten right handed and two out of three right eyed, from
what I can find from a brief search.
