Nutsy Canon M marketing defies explanation
I have been using my old Canon 10D, an Epson R-D1, and the Canon S-90.
The neat thing about the Canon M is that it can potentially replace all three! With a Leica M adapter it can take all my Canon and Voigtlander L39 / M mount lenses, and it can also utilize my TS-E lens and my 300 F/4L IS. I simply have no desire at this point to bring 2 enormous photo bags along with me on my travels, which used to be my practice. The M with a couple fast RF lenses, the TS-E, some extension tubes, and the 300mm lens will all fit into my Tenba bag. It's baffling that Canon even offers your typical standard zoom with that M camera. They should really be offering a compact set, including the 22 they already make, as well as something like their 40 pancake lens and maybe even a 85 or 90. Heck why not a super compact mirror lens, say 200-250mm? I think that they have done their research and, like Olympus and Pentax and others, decided that people want a standard, slowish zoom with their camera. Even Sony, whose camera is about as thin as can be, shows it off in print magazines with a huge honkin' lens. I take a subscription of Asahi Camera (Japanese photo mag) and the advertising in there is even more baffling than that you see in US photo magazines. They recently did a feature on a guy who uses his Nikon V-system camera with one of those gigantic 400mm Nikon telephotos. |

I guess he wants the equivalent of over 1000mm, and doesn't realise he'd probably be better off (or no worse) just putting it on a decent DSLR and cropping. Trevor. |
