Only had a 14-54mm f/2.8 lens. Cropped.

I always carry along a 75-300 lens just in case. It's quite
lightweight and the optical quality is reasonable.

I had the 75-300mm II and sold it, stupidly. I'm using the older 50-200mm 4/3rds lens, contemplating if I should spend $4000 Can on the new 300mm f/4.0.

Why not the Panny 100-400?

It's a little large for a walk-around lens and in my opinion, it's not as good as the Olympus 300mm. Most of the time, I'm on the long end of a telephoto so what I would really like to see is something like Nikon has, a 200-400mm.

The 300/F4 should be better from what I've read, but it's also a
very specialised lens (and it's heavier and more expensive).

Personally I find myself using the 75-300 mostly between 120 and
220 mm (occasionally up to 300mm) when shooting some distant
object (when the 12-100 is out of range).

There used to be software that could tell you across hundreds of photos what focal lengths you most-used.

There still is, it never went away, try Lightroom, or Bridge.

I never liked Lightroom, the program I used was stand-alone.

You never liked Adobe anything, and Lightroom is stand-alone.

But it was some time ago.

....and you can’t even remember what that amazing software you once knew of is/was.

The program you seek is:

https://www.vandel.nl/

although I've not used it for a long time! It's free.

Fortunately there is now software available with similar capabilities to
the Adobe photography programs. It's a one-off purchase at a much lower
cost - no subscription required.

https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/

It's half price right now (GBP 24 for Mac/Windows, GBP 10 for iOS per
program), and there's a 90-day free trial.

(I recall you mentioned it some time back - thanks!)

While Affinity Photo (AP) is a very capable piece of photo editing software it does not fully replace Photoshop, and it has zero capability as an asset management system. That means AP is not able to provide the FL analysis originally sought. So while it is software I will recommend for folks seeking to avoid the Adobe subscription model, for me I prefer the Lightroom/Photoshop workflow, and I will continue with my subscription.

That said I have an up to date version of Affinity Photo on my iMac, and the Affinity Photo for iPad on my iPad Pro. Since I am a sucker for photo software I have also bought copies of Luminar, Capture One Pro, Exposure X5, On1 Photo RAW, Pixelmator, the DxO NIK Collection, and others, all of which supplement my Lightroom/Photoshop workflow.

Of course, you and I have different approaches regarding post-processing
- I use it only when required, and shoot JPEG! I agree with your
comments, but for me a simple date structure provides all the management
I need.

I do also use PIE (Picture Information Extractor) on Windows as a
directory viewer and that provides sorting by focal length if needed. I
guess I tend to prefer separate tools (GeoSetter, AutoPano Pro, and so
on) each specialising in a particular function rather than a single
do-it-all program.

Pet annoyance: cameras which save photos with a LOCAL time yyyy-mm-dd
filename - I want everything in UTC!
