Default Nikon F100 vs Canon EOS 3

I'm a keen armature photographer about to purchase a Nikon
F100, though am now considering a Canon EOS 3. Salesman
recons the focusing system's better.

I'd be interested in your thoughts. The shop's getting the
EOS 3 in in a few days for me to look at.

My problem F100 or the EOS 3?

Would love to see a site that compares both!

Regards
Kaye

Only you can make the final decision, and it should be based on several
things, including how good the cameras feel in your hands, how intuitive the
interfaces seem to you, and technical things, like the EOS's supposed better
focus (I wouldn't be surprised if it were, but I don't believe it's by
much), or very real things, like mirror lock-up (EOS has it, F100 doesn't).
Another thing to consider is the system you are buying into, how much the
lenses cost that you want, and whether either system does something you
really want to do better than the other (not likely, considering you're
talking about the big two). Ultimately, though, either way, you really
can't go wrong.

I bought the F100, but I have an extensive collection of Nikon lenses
(extensive in amateur terms--six lenses or so, plus a flash).

All has been said!

I would first think about the lenses I'm planning to get and than compare
the prices and reviews.
Do also consider the special lenses, like tilt-shift, magnification and
stabilized optics.

Not to forget the advice that you should handle the two bodies before
buying.

Consider trying them with the vertical grip attached to.

May I add that the Canon has some "unique" features:

mirror lock-up
multi-spot metering (average of up to 8 exp)
depth-of-field mode
eye-controlled autofocus (can be switched of in a second if it doesn't fit
you!)

I own an EOS 3 and am a very happy camper, but If I was a Nikon shooter I
would probably be just as happy with the F100. It is lacking a couple things
I want and use (I bought the intervalometer to go with my EOS 3 so I can
easily do time lapse shooting) but all in all the F100 and the EOS 3 are
probably the best "matched" cameras on the market.
As Matt said -- try them both, look at the lenses you want, etc.

There is one thing more important than the choice of camera body, and
that is the choice of lenses. It is the lenses that make the shots,
not the camera body.

There is very little to choose between the F100 and EOS3. They are
both very fine cameras that lack nothing significant in terms of
features and performance. One could carp about the EOS3's plastic
casing, or the F100's plastic back, but that would be missing the
point.

But there are real differences in the lens systems available for these
cameras. The Canon range has a wider availability of quiet and fast
USM focusing motors and Image Stabilisation than Nikon's equivalent
AF-S Silent Wave motors and Vibration reduction.

So do your research, compare the lens systems and find out which brand
suits you best. Then, and only then, should you choose a camera body.

Personally, faced with your dilemma, I would like to be able to choose
Canon lenses and the F100 body!

I would suggest getting F80 unles you already have it and are looking
at upgrading from F80 to F100. If you do get the F100 instead, also
get the gridded viewfinder.
