google, meet fred.
fred, meet google:

Bob, might I suggest that the standard "go to Google" response is not always
appropriate?

One can't easily get the feelings of actual users/owners from Google. The
OP was looking for our impressions and opinions.

Should we automate all responses to newsgroup queries with "go to Google?"

you make sense.
would you consider google a logical first step,
to get background for the question that you ask?
google might take you to dpreview with many similar results.

then ask for opinions to provide practical insight
into the results of your research?

they sometimes forget that the average newsgroup IQ is only two digits.
you get smart answers, biased answers, and bad answers. you still have
to use your own judgment and sort through them.

I am sure that you have noticed people who answer,
sure that they know the answer,
and to the rest of us, the answer given was unfounded and not true.

some people ask because it takes no effort and no work.
they 'don't want to go through all the links', as one said.
