Default film seal leak

Hi, I recently shot 2 rolls of fuji NPH 400 in bright sunlight using a
used Nikon FE w/28-105 Sigma Lens fresh from ebay. Some of the shots
has a strip of whiteness and I wonder if it is because the camera
doesn't have good film door seal. About 20% of the shots have this
problem.

Put one frame with the stripe back in the camera upside down. Where the
stripe is, is where the leak is. Bob Hickey

Good advice.

But why only some of the pictures have the white strip and some don't?
How does one determine whether the leak is at the spool or in the
chamber.

The white strip is almost certainly a door hinge seal leak. With a
normal hold, your right hand covers the door hinge while shooting. You
get the leak when your hand is away from the right end and especially
when the sun is shining on the right end of a camera with a bad hinge
seal.

Before you send your camera off for a new seal you might try
Nikon Parts
(310) 516-7124 Part Ordering
(800) 645-6687 Opt. 4 Part Identification

The FE may take the same back (that the seal is mounted to) as the
current FM3a or they may have stock left for the FE back if it is
different. In any case, a new back from Nikon was less than $50 the
last time I bought one for my FE2 and that's less than a repair would
cost. (You use your old pressure plate.)
