On page 62 of the manual: Selecting an AF Point.
In the program mode you can select the AF focus area manually.

Although I did in fact read the manual from front to back, it appears that I
did not totally absord the contents of this section.

I'm like that. When I first get a insert high tech item of choice here, I
often skim the manual once all the way through and absorb little more than
where the info might be found later. Just enough to jar my memory.
