The focusing ring works in both AF and MF modes. This means that you can
use AF to get an approximate focus, then fine-tune the focus manually
without having to switch anything.

Canon's USM lenses do it, but the Tamron 90mm macro lens doesn't: it has
a clutch mechanism, so you slide the focusing ring forward or back to
switch between AF and MF. This is probably better than having to use a
separate switch, but still isn't as convenient as full-time manual
focusing. In the AF position the focusing ring just spins.
