Those are some pretty cool photos. Of course Harold Edgerton did this
stuff in the 30's, 40's and 50's after he invented the strobe...

Hello, Karl:

Very clever Nebraskan, that Harold Edgerton (1903-1990) was. g

Harold "Papa Flash" Edgerton also did full-speed stuff, ie rifle
ammo. According to the subject website, they were using stuff that
was going only 1200fps...just barely supersonic, instead of Mach 2.5 -
3. To freeze motion on the latter, you need roughly 4x more
illuminating strobe power.

Not only that, he did a neat series of atomic bomb detonations in the
early 50s. (Or at least it was done with his equipment; a thing called a
"Rapatronic" camera, with a non-mechanical, polarization-based shutter.)

Also, the actual Flickr page for the OP's stroboscopic photos (instead
of the blog they were mentioned on) is he

Does seem to be some somewhat inadvisable gun-safety stuff going on
there, but neat nonetheless...

The ones done with a sledgehammer shouldn't be missed either:
