The Zoom Lens Advantage
By Rick Sammon www.ricksammon.com "I'll never use a zoom lens." That's what some of my professional photographer friends said when I first got into photography back in the mid-1970s. .... "I never leave home without my zoom lenses." That's what many of my pro shooter friends now say. I'll spoil it for everyone: Because the second modern advance which made zoom lenses practical (the first was multicoating technology) was computer-aided design. Before fast computers were cheap and readily available, doing the math to design a good zoom lens was, for the most part, impossible for humans to perform in a cost-effective manner. steve |

I thought that molded optics that allow mass production of aspheric elements was in there somewhere. Any company that is big enough to have a camera production line going was big enough to afford a decent '70s vintage mainframe for lens calculations. steve -- --John to email, dial "usenet" and validate (was jclarke at eye bee em dot net) |
