Default seeking advice on buying a new camera

I am in the market for a digital camera
I had a canon A60 and it got dropped,
so i am looking for advice on what is on the market
i want to be able to take familly picture, i am not a professionnal in
the photography,

wht is the best buy for an ammateur?
and where is the best place to shop around

A complex question as there are so many choices. Do you want advice on a
point and shoot or a DSLR? I realize that you posted to a SLR group, but
that does rule out some of the P&S cameras, which are very good choices for
many users.

If you really want a DSLR, check out the Canon XTi ... darned good value!

Tell us what you would like to do with your camera.

If you have one nearby, Costco's planning on having it (to replace the
XT's that they sold previously in huge quantities) at an $899 intro
price within the next few weeks. Of course, the original XT intro'd at
$999 there, and within a year was down to $699. YMMV
