I've been getting this email
"THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW" in San Diego, $25 for first submission, less for more, 35% commission, it'll cost me some shipping too. Anyone know if this is worth pursuing or any other way to begin promoting my work for some $$ and to get my name out there? I got's rent to pay. (x-posted to 3 photo groups) |

Spam in the strictest sense of non solicited emails, but it is legit, I know a couple of the organizers, and it was a big hit last year. Not sure it's worth the price to ego boost ratio, though. -- Skip Middleton www.shadowcatcherimagery.com www.pbase.com/skipm |

I don't want an ego boost exactly but it might look good on a resume. I'm not going to San Diego (full day's drive) but it's a nice place & I suppose art buyers might make the trip for this show. The prizes are nothing spectacular, $1,000 first place, and it wouldn't be a big money maker, I'm pricing 13x19 prints framed to 20x26 at $150, with their comission that's $200 so maybe I send 3 & sell 1 & basically cover my costs for something on the resume to impress local galleries. Or submit all 15 shots that I have ready: http://www.edgehill.net/1/?SC=go.php&DIR=framed-exhibit .... for $165 & just see if they even like them??? Those would cost quite a bit to ship two huge boxes and I'd want to sell as many as possible which must be tough with that much competition hanging in the same room. Maybe I should just focus on something more local. But I've got these prints & I want to do something with them, now. |

Or how about standing around for a couple of days at an open air booth in Montclair? s I mean, my heart is out to those who do that, some are quite good, not to mention hardy and dedicated, but I couldn't do it. There has to be something around here, has to be, but I'm not wired into those things. Love the dunes shot- down Salinas way? -- John McWilliams |

My neighbor did that in my apartment building a couple months ago & it seemed kind of depressing hardly anyone showed but honestly her painting isn't that great either. I assume the next round will be some months off. Or how about standing around for a couple of days at an open air booth in Montclair? s I mean, my heart is out to those who do that, some are quite good, not to mention hardy and dedicated, but I couldn't do it. I'm not sure I'm up for that either. I'm in The City & there's plenty of street fairs all summer or farmer's markets combining the plant photos with selling plants from my nursery is one thing I considered but gosh that sounds tedious. There has to be something around here, has to be, but I'm not wired into those things. I put in an application to this coop gallery down the street: http://www.edgehill.net/1/?SC=go.php&DIR=California/Bay-Area/San-Francisco/gritty/2007-01-04-mission-night&PG=1&PIC=2 but that will take some months to get into also and it costs around a couple hundred bucks a month for just enough space for a handfull of frames. I'm also interested in something like the arboretum library or some such native plant venue, even if only for a little while. Crap, I need an agent, I hate all this marketing. The San Diego thing at least looks simple to submit... email some jpegs... and money. Then I'd begin to have the credentials to talk to places like the arboretum, etc. Love the dunes shot- down Salinas way? Great Sand Dunes National Monument, San Luis Valley, Colorado. I was stupid to not shoot that in RAW (on the D70 when it was new) but yeah it still makes a gorgeous print, thanks. Most of those are on my new 10MP D200. Thanks for your thoughts & comments. |

Don't know what area you are in but I've entered a couple local juried shows, $5 per 4x6 submission (you only send framed prints of what they choose), 10% commission, and I won $250 in one show which more than covered my expenses so far. Or join the local farmer's market/street fair/art show circuit. That's what my Mom did before starting a co-op gallery in Temecula. Yeah, I keep thinking about it but so far have There has to be something around here, has to be, but I'm not wired into those things. Love the dunes shot- down Salinas way? Same here, but I don't think those are beach dunes, it looks like the desert and I'm thinking either Eureka Dunes on the edge of Death Valley Natl Park (those look like the eastern sierras in the background, the shot could be from south of the dunes pointing N by NW). Here's a higher perspective from a similar spot: http://static.flickr.com/3/4557378_fb998bdbeb.jpg Or Kelso Dunes farther south in the East Mojave. I could be way off, though. Yeah, that may not be worth it. You might want to keep an eye out for co-ops outside of town. Through the art shows my Mom met someone who has a co-op in Bisbee, AZ so she's sold a few of her paintings there.
