Default Olympus SP-500UZ

Just bought the SP500UZ and one strange thing about it is no matter which
image size setting I have it on when I download the photos to Microgrfx the
resolution is 72 dpi (even at SHQ 2816 x 2112) were as the Nikon 4100 is
300dpi.

How can you see the details of resolution in Photoshop & how much does it
matter. A4 prints seem fine.

Not sure but look at the size lxw. When you crop to a 4x6 you will see
the resolution greatly increase. That is what I think.

The camera works in pixels (eg 2816 x 2112), not dpi. The dpi only come into
play when printing.

For example, if the print is to be 10", then 2816/10 = 281dpi.
If the print size is to be 6", then 2816/6 = 469dpi.

The 72 dpi you mention is just some arbitrary assignment.

72 dpi is a common assignment for monitors, and 300 dpi is a common
assignment for printing.
Some file types can store these assignments, other cannot.
This has nothing what so ever to do with camera resolution.
