It's a miracle.

Good news. So what was the problem, and what was the fix?

likely because windows update rebooted in the middle of adobe's update,
usually at 3.30a.

The fact that the entire Windows 10 retail market
is an unpaid beta testing group for corporate
business customers, who get patches 4 months later,
after the wrinkles have been ironed out.

nonsense.

corporate users are never on the cutting edge of anything, no matter
what it is.

That is like saying Washington and Paris are used interchangeably.

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden, and Helsinki is the capital of Finland.

When one talks of hostages empathizing with their kidnapers it is the
"Stockholm Syndrome".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome

There is no "Helsinki Syndrome"
It's a fairly well-known meme to use "Helsinki Syndrome" as a
deliberate error in place of "Stockholm Syndrome" because it has been
used so many times as inadvertent error. It was used in one of the
"Die Hard" movies.

I must have missed that particular movie, but it remains an error,
inadvertent or otherwise. Unless it was a scripted gag in the movie.
The two cities are certainly not "interchangeable" in my world.

Part of the joke is that it plays on the stereotype of Americans as
ignorant of world geography.

That seems appropriate, though it can be said the stereotype goes
beyond ignorance of world geography.

"Helsinki Syndrome" gets almost as many Google hits as "Stockholm
Syndrome" because of both the deliberate joking use and the
inadvertent mistaken use.

Oh well.

My brother moved to Denmark "temporarily" in 1969. He's been a
resident of Denmark ever since.

On one of his visits here, we were in a conversation with doctor
friend of ours and my brother mentioned he lives in Denmark. The
doctor then asked if he liked living in Sweden. He was under the
impression that "Denmark" is a city in Sweden.

Many Americans are woefully ignorant of world geography, but there are
many Europeans who are equally ignorant of US geography. Just
recently a person I know who lives in Oxford UK wrote me to say he'd
be in Key West FL in December and wanted to know if we could meet for
lunch.

When I informed him that it's a 6.5 hour drive between Orlando and Key
West, he was amazed. "But they're both in Florida!" he said.

When my father's brother visited for the first time from Greece, he
wanted to know if my father could take him to California for the
weekend. That's a long drive from New York. My uncle is a brilliant
man but he didn't know US geography very well. His daughter is married
to a man names Kostas who does know it very well. About twenty years
ago we were talking about some authors and Mark Twain was mentioned.
Kostas spoke up and mentioned the connection to the Mississippi River
and then listed off all the sates the river runs through. He had never
been to the USA. I can't do that.

It's very possible, because I don't think there was any problem with
Windows itself.

To answer David's question at the same time, the first clue was when I
opened LR after both updates. When I tried to scroll through the
collections on the left side of the window, it took forever. Then I
saw that the menus would not open, and right clicking did not work on
anything. When other windows opened, only the outline and title bar
would appear. And everything that did work worked very slowly.

What impressed me is that the MS tech was very good, and got to the
source very quickly. He told me that he ended all 3d party processes,
and the PC came back to life immediately. He then used Malwarebytes to
scan for any issues, but found nothing with that.

I am so used to hearing that the only fix is a clean install of
Windows that it was just a relief to stumble across someone who took
the time to look for the actual problem, instead of using the usual
shotgun overkill approach.

Hi,

I had a friend in Holland who thought that while visiting in N.Y.C., he
could drive round trip to Los Angeles and back for the weekend. He had
no clue that the trip is 3,000 miles = 5,400 kilometers.

While in Amsterdam, try to go to a good Indonesian restaurant for a
genuine rijsttafel. It is an Indonesian/Dutch banquet made up of many
small plates of wonderful food.

Also, keep away from Zeedijk, the bad girl district.

Have a nice trip,

My wife and I enjoyed such a rijsttafel in Amsterdam on a European trip
in 1982. My wife insisted on that as she had spent her early childhood
in Singapore, and was yearning for the nostalgia of that experience.
That trip also included a train ride up the Rhine to Zurich and then to
Lucerne. I really liked Lucerne. In those days I was still working for
Schering-Plough and part of the costs were borne by them.

Also, keep away from Zeedijk, the bad girl district.

I understand they honor all major credit cards. ;-)

Have a nice trip,

Thanks, that will be in mid-December.

Their old joke is: It's a business doing pleasure with you.

In the 1950s I lived in Amsterdam for a few months, and then in Utrecht
for almost 5 years. Amsterdam was much nicer, but Utrecht was a great
place to study. The Dutch people were absolutely wonderful.

Have a nice trip. Bring electrical adaptor plugs, and make sure that
your gadgets can run on 220 volts A.C. 50 cycle current. Bring a
photocopy of the first 2 pages of your passports, in a different
pocket,in case the originals are lost or stolen.

The passport thing I have handled with Mobile Passport, and I have
copies of those two pages in a protected Dropbox folder.
Mobile Passport is great, as in quite a few US Port of Entry airports
you can by-pass the normal ICE check line with a smartphone CBP receipt
and a barcode. Fortunately SFO is one of those airports.

most stuff these days is universal, so all that matters is a physical
adapter, and even that is't always needed because there are universal
sockets, some of which provide usb power (although using that is a
security risk).

take pics with a smartphone.
