I needed to get some assistance for my XF100-400mm, and I found this SevenOak
CF Gimbal Head Adapter. It functions in much the same way as the Wimberly
Sidekick at about $100 less costly. It attaches to my ballhead tripod mount,
and works perfectly.

I assume that you are referring to the lens collar + foot. If so that does
allow rotation from portrait and landscape orientation, as well as attachment
to a tripod, or monopod. However, a gimbal provides for smooth, effortless
movement in all axes in addition to the rotation around the lens collar. This
particular one provides all the support, and freedom of movement at a
reasonable price $130.95.

The only con is that there are ties when i have to remember to lock the
controls.

That last should read "times I have to remember to tighten the control
knobs."

....and that is the beauty of a gimbal when using heavier/bulkier lens/camera
combos. With my new SevenOak adaptor, or the Wimberly Sidekick you have the
ability to convert an existing ballhead mount into a gimbal, all without
actually changing the ballhead. When the gimbal adaptor is in the ballhead QR
the ballhead main, & friction control knobs ar locked for other than making
minor adjustments. The pan lock knob remains loose. This results in a rig
where the the camera/lens combo is held in balanced equilibrium. It can be
moved freely to follow whatever your subject might be, and then released to
remain in position without the need to worry about the ballhead.

I should have got one of these years ago.

There is one caveat with regard to my particular purchase. The SevenOak
Gimbal Adaptor is described as *small* as such it does seem to be more suited
to smaller DSLRs or MILCs. For larger DSLR/lens combos I would suggest either
the Wimberly Sidekick, or the ProMediaGear Tomahawk. That, or step up and buy
a convential Gimbal head.

This is entirely coincidence. I already had the camera set up and I
have just been trying out the camera in my old iPhone 4s. Here is
mine:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/nie2x135b5..._0020.JPG?dl=0

It works very well until I insert the compound slides I use for macro
work. Then it becomes big and clunky.
