D70 buffer question

Why does the D70 buffer hold fewer (7) medium (M) size images
than large (L) size images at every image quality level (Fine, Normal,
Basic)?
(from User manual p 45)
Am I mis-reading something ?

The number is correct see for a more detailed answer the

Am I mis-reading something ?

I'd gather it may be a typo as it is a fixed value for medium images,
whereas the number changes for the other sizes as a function of quality.
