Default My first Nikon RAW pics - now what?

OK I took some RAW pics with my (new) Nikon D70, so now what do I do with them?

How do I extract the greatest quality?

I have Elements 2 and Nikon View and a few other things...

Thanks!

Though I've got the D70, and have a CD with Nikon View on it, I do not know
what that program's capabilities are. Same for Elements.

However, Nikon Capture handles NEF's well. I use Photoshop CS2 with the latest
Raw Converter.

You need a program that will read, and convert NEF file format images to
something that Elements can handle. Nikon View may do it, but I have never
even installed it, as I had other programs to do it.

I'd suggest that you go to both Adobe's and Nikon's sites, and look at the
capabilities of your two programs. You may have what you need, or you may not.

Another way to do it, is to download Adobe's DNG (Digital Negative) program.
It handles NEF's beautifully. Process the files (after backing up!!!!!) to DNG
format, then do one of several things: if Elements handles DNG just use it. If
not, in the DNG converter, Save AS TIF, or PSD (if Elements sees those). DNG
is freeware from Adobe's site.

Good luck,
Hunt

The only thing I have used Nikon View for (and it's excellent for
this) is to edit the IPTC information for sending to news services and
archiving. For working on NEF's you need Nikon Capture or Adobe DNG
convertor or one of the programs that works with DNG. I'm not sure
which ones do, but the Adobe site will tell you.
