I just got one of these Better Beamer flash extenders. Aimed it at a
bird 50 feet away, squeezed the shutter release, and the bird exploded
in a puff of feathers. Am I using this thing incorrectly?

No. That's what it's designed to do.

No. If the bird had exploded into a puff of smoke then I would say you
had your flash turned up too high. Merely roasted and it is too low. So
you have it just right.

Whatever you do, don't point at your head like RichA did.

OK, so I should go TTL -0.3 next time?

yeah but the Beemer Z4 was ONLY better than the Z3 and not much else, so its
not much of an accolade :-)
having said that, I wouldn't refuse a Z4 if it was given to me ;-)
