D80 w/ 18-135 squeek
A friend of mine has a D80 w/ 18-135 len. After a week or 2 the lens
would squeek like a mouse when auto-focusing. I was thinking about getting the same rig but I'm now very concerned about this problem. I seached on the web and have found others with the same problem. Any thoughts on this? thank you. |

I think the lens probably has a squeak in it. Look for mouse tracks. |

Can't say that I know much about it, but Ken Rockwell has a useful review of this 18-135mm AF-S lens. Nothing that would help diagnose the squeak, but he had this to say: It's quiet. It makes only a very soft plastic-sliding-on-plastic sound like my 18-200mm VR. http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-135.htm so you have confirmation of sorts that the lens should not be squeaking, and being well within Nikon's warrantee period, and most likely of the store he bought it from if it's only a couple of weeks old, he/she should be able to get the store to exchange it or Nikon to repair it. According to the review, the lens has some things going for it and some negatives. Your friend may even be able to "upgrade" it to another lens (or two) if the store permits it. Before doing anything, I'd probably try to speak with someone in Nikon's tech. sup't dep't, on the off chance that they'd have some useful ideas. Nikon's 18-70mm, formerly a "kit" lens is a highly regarded and well made lens, considering its relatively low price. To that, your friend could add one of Nikon's 300mm zoom lenses. I have a very old 75-300mm cheapie (non-D) and Ken also reviews the more expensive 70-300mm VR lens. It includes suggestions for other lenses and links to his reviews of them. These include Nikon's lightweight 18-200mm VR, the much heavier 18-200mm f/2.8 AF-D, an inexpensive 70-300mm G lens ($130) and some others. http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/70-300-vr.htm |
