400mm lens & up
Yes it IS sharp. http://www.pbase.com/cameras/sigma/50_500_4_63_ex_dghsm You've shown it makes nice 500 x 800 pixel images; most consumer zooms will do that. How about showing some 100% crops, including some with tough lighting situations? That's where you see the difference between fixed focal length lenses and zooms, and that is what makes the difference in impressive enlargements. If you only want to show small web images, then consumer zooms are fine. Roger http://baron.phpnet.us/50-500/crw_51...?size=1&exif=Y |

Roger Looks pretty good, but that doesn't tell the complete story. http://baron.phpnet.us/50-500/crw_51...?size=1&exif=Y click on the zoom button below the MTF chart for the 50-500 lens and note green line (30 cycles/mm) never is above 80%, and the dashed curve is around 50% at 500mm. http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/len...07&navigator=3 Now compare a fixed focal length lens, 500mm: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...mode lid=7318 A low cost fixed focal length telephoto like this one also does better: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...mode lid=7314 Roger |

L glass. And is somewhat budget wise. Case closed. mb Not really. The OP said he has a 75-300 zoom and is looking for a lens of 400mm or greater. The fact that he lists a few zooms doesn't necessarily mean that he wants an additional zoom, it may just as easily mean that he wasn't aware that a 400mm 'L' was available in his price range. It's also worth considering that the 'low cost' lens Roger indicated is cheaper than the 100-400 L the OP was taking as his baseline. For what it's worth, I'm more than happy with my 100-400L.
