Who needs a stinking 5D?

stinking?

Okay, well I guess I do, when the price comes down a little . . .

In the meantime, the 10D still has the pixel pitch that hummers

love.

Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM with 12mm extension tube to allow a bit closer
focus.

These are attractive images...but the first two look like they've had
severe sharpening applied to the head/neck area...to the point of making
it look somewhat like a drawing or painting.

What gives?

One of the problems with photographing these birds, especially from the
front, it the amount of light that comes from the gorget area. Those
feathers are simply much brighter than the rest and I sharpened the whole
bird the same. In some images that I have seen of species like the Calliope
hummingbird, the effect you are describing makes it almost seem as if the
gorget feathers were added into the image in PS.

How did you manage the head-on shots?

I said, "Duck!" and instead of ducking . . .

I used a Perky Pet Oasis feeder, one of the flat, saucer shaped feeders.
I cut off the perches and put thumbtacks in all but the feeding port
opposite me. Then I just waited for the bird to do the sip, back up,
hover and sip again routine and snapped the shot during the hover phase.

Superb shot!

There are many more superb shots on Eric Miller's site, including
these gems:

Plus nature shooters will find it well worth reading the excellent
tutorials on the following page (some beautiful images too!):

To the OP: You really should upgrade to a Canon EOS 1Ds MkII because
your ability easily justifies a better camera than the 10D. You would
find it relatively easy to sell 16.7 MP images for publication,
whereas a 6 MP image is now getting quite difficult to sell.

The Canon EOS 5D would be a significant step up from the 10D but in a
competitive world you might still lose out on sales to 1Ds MkII users.

Thanks for the plug and nice words. Unfortunately, I have a day job that
I won't be leaving any time soon. Maybe one day I will be able to afford
a used 1Ds MKII, but by then, I'd probably need 22MP to sell anything!
BTW, I wouldn't have the first clue about how to market or sell an image.

Technically very nice, and I'm sure very difficult to pull off
consistently, but nonetheless, as boring as can be after one or two.

I assume you had the feeder on a stand. I have one of those feeders,
but the hanger gets in the way if I try that. I like your idea of
plugging the other feeder holes.

Recently, I spent about two hours on a Sunday morning trying to get the
hummer to hit a certain flower where I had pre-focused the camera. I
had the 20D on a tripod with a remote cable running inside the house.
I had two speedlights set up, one on each side for illumination. Then
I went inside and sat and waited ..... and waited ..... and waited.
That damned bird would hit every flower on the plant except the one I
wanted him to hit.

After about two hours of this I saw a chipmunk run across the yard and
hide in a downspout. I let my dog, Buster, out and said, "Go get
Chippee!" Buster starts down the steps, sees the camera rig and gets
spooked, jumps off the side of the porch instead hooking and dragging
my remote cable as he ran. The rest of the scene was like a horror
movie in slow motion. I watched as the 20D and the 70-1200 f/2.8L came
slowly crashing down to the pavement. I tried to hurry down and catch
it, but like I said, everything was moving in slow motion.
Fortunately, the lens landed straight on the lens hood, knocking it
off, but cushioning the blow for the rest of the camera. Lucky for me,
and especially for Buster, the only damage was a big scratch on the end
of the lens hood.
