Default newbie RAW question for XP or FC1

Hi everyone,

This is a duplicate post, but its a bit longer at the end

I have Fedora Core 1 ( FC1 ) at present and want to use the UFRAW
plugin to load and process canon raw files from my powershot S70
instead of using the software that came with the camera.

The UFRAW website says I need gimp 2.2.x but FC1 which is the OS
that I currently use has gimp 1.2

Should I just upgrade FC1 to FC3 directly using the CD upgrade
method or should I uninstall all the existing versions of gimp, gtk+,
glib, etc,
etc, etc and then download and install the gimp 2.2 related
requirements and software and compile it myself on FC1?
( I'm asking this because if I do the latter, I am not sure if my
system will remain stable for other X applications )

===Other newbie kind of questions that come to mind a ===

Can I use the UFRAW independantly of gimp on FC1 and also
use gimp 1.2 to further process my images later on? I mean,
what do I need to do to read and process canon raw files ?

Is there any other raw processing software apart from UFRAW
that will allow me to use my current gimp version ? I've heard
gphoto2 can work with my canon but I've never used it.
Maybe there's something else out there.

And what if I use canon's zoombrowser to load the raw file.
Then which is the best software for "manipulating" it
Is it ZoomBrowser, Gimp with ufraw, Rawshooter essentials?

I heard RawShooter Essentials doesn't have tone levels and curves.
I heard ZoomBrowser is no good, but most of my photos have erroneous
exposure, - Maybe ZoomBrowser can solve that issue instead of the 3rd
party softwares?

Can I just read a raw file using zoombrowser, then save it as a raw
file and use another software to do other things like level and curve
manipulations?
Or do i have to save it as a tif first and then do all that. In that
case, can i adjust
exposure on tifs ?

Please let me know your thoughts To be honest I have never processed
a Raw image, I just want to know how to start and how to take it
further.
Thanks!

Thanks !

Hi,

I never used Redhat or Fedora Core. But from what i know most of the
Linux distribution actually do have an option to upgrade your system to
latest stable version. I know Suse does even though it's quite painful
and risky process. Debian and debian based distro's do it while you
drink tea.

You can also upgrade just the package you need and any dependancies it
requires rather then the whole system.

But the advantage of the newer version is that you get a lot more out of
it and get more stable system with more functionality.

Gimp 2.2 is way better than 1.2 .

Second part of your question i can't answer.
