Default [PHOTO] Lightning storm over the ocean

I got home from dinner last night as the last of a storm was hitting. I
could still see it raging over the ocean.
Took off with my tripod, camera and cable release.

I only got one decent shot as the cable release was acting up and not
holding in bulb.

That row of lights is a coal ship off the coast.

Nice! Every time I've tried shooting lightning I couldn't get
the camera to autofocus on the bolt

Don't use AF, manual set to infinity, same as for fireworks.

Nice work.. This is another of those shots that looks edited - I would
try to selectively color balance it to make the two cloud areas more
alike in hue - it looks a bit like the second strike was 'shopped
in...!

Pity the ship lights are a bit blown (bloomed?) - can I rudely ask -
is it a bit out of focus? (O:

I'm not posting from high ground - I've not had much success (*yet*)
with lightning - I have a couple of good shots of good strikes (but
lousy background/foreground), and others with nicely set up scenes but
no good strikes.

Sigh. One day...

I was trying to make funnies

I was also going to joke about not being able to click the
shutter quick enough to catch the lightning, but I won't bother
now...

Maaaaaaate, one of my greatest enjoyments in my life is listening to the
whooshing sounds of the stuff I don't get straight away. ;-)

That's where I like it Mark, that is how it was. There were two
totally different storms at what looked like different distances away.
Over an hour on the beach this was the only time I saw a bolt go from
one to the other.

Pity the ship lights are a bit blown (bloomed?) - can I rudely ask -
is it a bit out of focus? (O:

Picture yourself on a boat on a river well on the sea during this storm
and winds. Over 2 minutes do you think the seas would be calm. The blur
is the ship moving around during the time it was exposed. It is
something I always find annoying and often 'shop' them out.

I'm not posting from high ground - I've not had much success (*yet*)
with lightning - I have a couple of good shots of good strikes (but
lousy background/foreground), and others with nicely set up scenes but
no good strikes.

I have two I class as my best
This was the first, and so many people TELL me it is shopped.
The blur of the lights is the camera in bulb mode and me holding the
shutter button with my finger. I got bored after 2 minutes and reached
down and moved the camera slightly.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/silverm...7603670077832/

And this one I would class as my very best
Someone posted this here before which is how I was told about this group

Thanks for the comments everyone

I have a lot of trouble finding a flash setting that adequately lights up
the clouds.......
