Default Camera Stuck :o(

My D50 got stuck in the middle on taking a pix.

I was taking a picture indoors, relatively low light and was using the
built-in flash (didn't have my SB-400 with me) and after taking a
couple of pix the camera got stuck in the middle of taking one. It
seemed like it was in the middle of the shutter opening / closing.

I tried turning the power off and then on, taking the battery out and
putting it back in, replacing the lens. But no matter what, the camera
seemed to NOT want to get un-stuck.

By stuck I mean that the camera would not allow taking another
picture. Every time I tried pressing the shutter there would be a
"Err" message.

The worst part - this is the second time this has happened (

Eventually the camera has started working again but I have no idea how
that happened.

Please help. I've had this camera for just over 2 years and have taken
about 3,800 pix so far. Eventually I will be getting another camera
(I'm thinking of the D300, but am not sure) but was hoping that I
wouldn't have to. Also, I was hoping to still be able to use this as a
back-up / secondary camera even after I get the next.

Have anyone else seen / experienced this? Any idea what this could be?

Manzoor,

No answer for you, but it may also be worth asking in
rec.photo.digital.slr-systems and/or a specialist Nikon group.

Cheers,
David

DP Reviews Nikon group would be a good start.

Sound to me like you blew your shutter. It's not exactly rare but
neither is it common. Everything is working within such exact
tolerances that a tiny mis-alignment or piece of dusk can screw things
up pretty well.

So, there are a number of schools of thought here. My particular
school figures the camera is broken and needs to go back to the shop,
so it's not exactly like you're going to damage it any more. So hold
on to it firmly with 2 hands and shake the living cr*p out of it.
Maybe something will loosen up or go back into place. You won't
damage it any more and you might just fix it. But this isn't for the
nervous.

The second school of thought is send it back to the factory for
service. Then maybe yell at them to cover it under warrrenty because
it only has 3800 pix on it. The yelling won't help but it might make
you feel good.

Finally, try taking the lens off and looking inside the camera. See
if there's anything seriously wrong -- like maybe a spider nest or
something. You probably won't find anything, but who knows. Last
time I did that, I took off the lens as the first step and was quite
discouraged by the amount of mangled metal I saw inside. Ouch.

So anyway, good luck with it.

Try a new set of batteries (I know, this is a long shot, a very long shot).

Interesting. My D70 did that shortly after I got it. It finally
released the shutter the next day. It never did it again.

I asked Nikon about it and they said if it did it again to send it in
for repair. They said that there were only a few things it could be,
none of them good. Worst possibility was a bad shutter, but a bad
firmware chip can do it, too.

Since your camera has already done this more than once I would
recommend sending it back to Nikon.
