Default Reports on Fall Colors ...will appreciate responses...

Hi,

Would like to see any information folks have on current fall color
situation.

I have some time for a run to "somewhere west of Denver and east of the
Pacific ocean starting October 6.

Of interest and being considered a list below. Just need to find out what
folks have seen or expect in 10-15 days. Also, any ideas on general areas
or specific locations not included in the fell swoop RFI on the standard
locations noted.

1. Glacier Park MT.
2. Yellowstone/Teton
3. Northern NM
4. Southern Colorado
5. Central Colorado / Leadville, Salida, Crested Butte
6. Lee Vining/Bishop
7. Idaho / Sawtooth and the rest that I am clueless about ?
8. Wheeler Peak ? Never been there...don't know what the possibilities
are outside of the Bristlecones
9. Steen's Mountain Oregon ?

Any other place besides Seattle, and NW in general...I need a good serious
road trip for a mental health break.

Mostly just want to get a current fall color report...knowing that things
are possibly getting a bit late.

Thanks for responses...

I was in Yellowstone/Tetons last week, and there was some good color
in the northern part of the Tetons and some in Yellowstone. Also,
northern Montana had some nice color (I was about 100 miles from
Glacier).

Highway 70 and Aspen Alley in southern Wyo were very near peak when I
was down there on Sept. 25. I expect the Snowy Range Scenic Byway is
probably at peak.

You can check here, last update was the 24th:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/recreation/fallcolors/report/

Weather.com has a map, although I think this is based on historical data
rather than spotters:
http://www.weather.com/maps/activity...age_large.html

For Grand Teton, you could try calling Visitor's Information:
307-789-3300
FWIW, the last week in September is usually high color in Grand Teton.

Also, I don't think your site is lame at all, nicely designed. Good
photos. You do have some weird little black rectangles showing up
instead of photos on most of the pages, placeholders for content you
haven't got uploaded yet?

4. Southern Colorado

I was in the San Juans the past few days, mainly Telluride, Ouray, Ridgway,
Silverton and Durango. A nice snowstorm a week or so earlier had left plenty
of scenic snow on the peaks above 11,000 ft (many of the peaks are 14,000 ft or
so) but the aspens were not as colorful as last fall, I felt. I think this
part of Colorado didn't get as much moisture as other parts of the state.

To put a number on it, last fall we stayed in this same area 10 days and shot
40 rolls of medium format film (all we had plus several rolls we borrowed or
bought at exhorbitant prices in Telluride) ... this year we only stayed 4 days
and shot only two partial rolls of 220 film, not quite finishing a roll in the
645 body (28 down, 2 to go) and not quite finishing a roll in the 6x7 body (15
down, 5 to go).

I would go elsewhere myself this year

Bill

Hi Bill
I just returned from Rocky Mountain National Park and the
Peak-to-Peak highway. I took the 4x5 camera as well as
DSLR plus 500mm f/4 for animals. Last week I headed
south west from Denver Here is my statement
of conditions in Colorado over the last week or so:
0 (that's zero) sheets of 4x5 exposed. Most trees are
still pretty green, or they have dropped ALL their leaves.
There are exceptions with some very pretty trees at peak,
but they will typically be beside a green aspen or one with
no leaves. Best colors I saw today were in Golden Gate Canyon
State Park (but I took no pictures of them, not even a digital
snapshot).

Lots of nice elk in RMNP though, if you like elk pictures.
I heard one of the best elk bugling ever with multiple
males calling at the same time. There were no fights though.
I saw probably 80 elk, and a few mule deer.

Thanks Bill...I grew up in Colorado (Del Norte, Delores) and thought it was
probably too late. You confirmed my suspicions, plus sounds like an off
year. Helps me narrow down my targets.

BTW...I checked...it's officially the Balloon "Fiesta". October 1-10

Thanks Roger, appreciate the info on RMNP. As with Bill's answer on other
parts of Colorado, helps me narrow my target area.

It's been several years since I've to Great Basin NM, but as I recall
the best color is on the road up to the Bristlecones. Not much above
that. Most color happens pretty much at the same time, so I'd imagine
the best is happening right about now.
