Default New / Upcoming Cameras (Nikons in particular)

I got a D50 about a year and a half ago and am starting to look around
hoping to buy my next camera sometime next year.

While I'm waiting, I would like to do some research. Andy idea where I
can go to see what NIkon might be coming out with over the next 12
months?

The D200 was available, but way too out of my budget, when I got my
D50. But both the D80 and the D40 came out since. I now wish I'd
waited a few months for the D80 (

Thanx for any & all help.

I think you did good. The D80 is nicer than the D50 but not worth
paying twice as much for, in my opinion.

Nikon does not announce upcoming models until they announce them. All
you get before that are rumors, which usually turn out to be wrong.
However, bythom.com has a page about rumors and guesses if you like
that kind of speculation.

Models that I'm hoping to see: 1) a D200 replacement with a full frame
sensor, to compete with the Canon 5D; 2) a 4MP monochrome version of
the D200.

Only buy a new camera when it will do something that you want to do but
cannot with your current camera.

There is always a new model on the horizon with ever more new and unususal
features.

I think the D80 may be smaller than the D50 ... which may not be a postive
thing for some people [and for others it is].

Pipedreams ... especially the latter ;-)

I'm novice enough of a photographer to not know what features to look
for ( I am trying out what I have with my D50. I have finally bought
a 24-85mm Lens (f/2.8-4D).

I was hoping, by learning what new models are coming out, and with
what features, I could compare how far my D50 is from it and be able
to decide if I really needed that new camera.

But you're right - I should not look for what might be out there (or
coming), but concentrate on what I've got and what I can do with it.

You could spend your whole life waiting for the perfect camera. Instead,
you bought one and started taking pictures. Don't feel bad you didn't get
the latest and greatest...all that gives you is 90 days bragging rights.
Why don't you see if you can actually wear out your D50 and use the money
you save on NOT buying a new body now to go some place cool to use your
camera.

Thanx for any & all help.

Here's hoping you get what you want, but do you think that there's
even a snowball's chance . . . for #2? I think you'll see an IR
version of the D200 before a 4MP monochrome version, and when do you
think that might be, he asks? Oh, about never, more or less.

You probably will not need a new camera for quite some time. It does take a
very long time to exhaust all of the capabilities of the current models.
In fact, you may never need another camera.

If it's any consolation, I liked what I saw in the D80 but ended
up getting one of the last available D50s very recently. Each has
some advantages over the other, with the edge clearly going to the
D80. But the differences are no way significant enough to justify
paying more than twice the price, $925 vs $400 for the D80 over the
D50. Considering taxes and the relatively cheap warranty available
for the D50 (5 year, still camera under $500) I probably saved more
than $600. D50 owners have another advantage in that when the next
model is released (D90, or whatever), D50 owners might find it much
easier to consider upgrading, since the differences between a D50
and a D90 should be considerable. But D80 owners wouldn't have
gotten as much use from their cameras before upgrading, and the
differences between a D80 and a D90 would be less, maybe not enough
to justify so quick an upgrade. So be a little patient, and you may
do the upgrade leapfrog over D80 owners when the next model is
released.

I can't see any camera company bringing out such a camera (absolutely
nothing agains Nikon here; I can't see *any* maker doing this).
For Nikon, it would mean a new sensor in the D200 body (how else to
make a monochrome D200?). The market would be very small, despite the
many who say they'd buy such a camera. Why would someone downgrade a
D200 to shoot only monochrome when it's dead simple to shoot
monochrome on a current D200, as well as color? And, yes, this camera
would cost more, and do less.
I just don't see people actually saying, "Please take this camera,
cripple it, and charge me more for it."
Of course, I could be wrong. :-)
