Flashgun not working?
A couple of questions. Does anybody here use the new Rebel 300D? If so, what
flashgun do you use? I bought this model last week but none of my TTL guns work with it. I tried an old Vivitar gun tonight and it worked however. When I try a Sigma or a Sunpak, the little flash symbol flashes in my viewfinder but disappears again and I am left in ordinary mode with no flash at all. My manual says that these guns should work (actually it says that canon Speedilite will work but so should other TTL models). Anybody able to help ne out here? |

There are a limited number of flashes that will work with the newer Canon Digital cameras, the Sigma 5000 Super DG (plus a bunch of other letters), the Canon EX series of flashes, the 200, 420 and 550, and Quantum T4 and T4D all will work in E-TTL. Some older flashes, like the 540EZ will work in manual mode, no TTL, but many, like your Sunpak, won't even fire. I'm not sure about Metz. I tried a new Sunpak 5000 on my wife's 10D, not even a flicker. I'm surprised your Vivitar fired. -- Skip Middleton http://www.shadowcatcherimagery.com |

After reading your post, I did a Google search and saw that you were totally correct. That's pretty mean if customers have to spend a load of extra money on a flashgun when they have just done that to buy the camera! Mind you, the internal flash is unbelievable so if truth be told, ya don't really have to buy an external one at all! Anyway, thanks again. |

I bought a Cobra 700AF gun a few years ago but I rarely used it as it was big and chunky and I just didn't like it. I just tried it on the 300D and it works perfectly! Happy days! |

Well, that built in one has a pretty weak guide number, and it is thoroughly blocked by large diameter lenses like the 28-135 IS. You can pick up a 420 EX from B&H for about $180. Works great. http://www.shadowcatcherimagery.com/WS26.html -- Skip Middleton http://www.shadowcatcherimagery.com |

Does it give you TTL flash metering, or is it just manual? If it gives any sort of TTL, that's a great thing, and I'll wander down to my local camera store and try out some of the other flashes. -- Skip Middleton http://www.shadowcatcherimagery.com |
