What is the latest known good version of JascSoftware PaintShopPro
(before it went to the dark side under Corel)?
o Here's my running syslog (which I write for every installation...)
https://i.postimg.cc/zv5SSTwn/psp01.jpg

Note that I confirmed version JascSoftware psp 5.01 is a "good" version
o But later JascSoftware versions may also be good (between 5 & 9 anyway)

Randomly select a version that seems "old enough" to be a "good" version.
o http://www.oldversion.com/windows/paint-shop-pro/
o http://www.oldversion.com/windows/download/paint-shop-pro-5-01
o Sat 10/24/2020
Name: 5.01_psp501.exe
Size: 18241961 bytes (17 MiB)
SHA256: 7D3ED18F0A6CF25C8F09F5241CA73A6E40599569ABEBFA3F1D BCCED614B058EB

Turn the gateway off using option 1:
o Win+R network
(ption 1 route delete 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1
(ption 2 route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1

Check the network to ensure it's off:
o Win+R curlme
Where curlme runs the equivalent of the following, among other tasks:
o Win+R %comspec% /k curl icanhazip.com

Once confirmed the gateway is down, doubleclick on the installer.
It wants to go, by default, in C:\Program Files (x86)\Paint Shop Pro 5
I put it where it belongs, in C:\app\editor\pic\psp
Note: You define where it belongs; not a million different developers.

By default, these components are selected:
o [x]Paint Shop Pro Application Files
o [x]Animation Shop Application Files
o [x]Picture Tube Brushes
o [x]Paint Shop Pro Sample and Tutorial Files
o [x]Animation Shop Sample Files

I changed that to:
o [x]Paint Shop Pro Application Files
o [_]Animation Shop Application Files
o [_]Picture Tube Brushes
o [_]Paint Shop Pro Sample and Tutorial Files
o [_]Animation Shop Sample Files

The installer runs to completion.
o C:\app\editor\pic\psp\Psp.exe
Name: Psp.exe
Size: 3632128 bytes (3547 KiB)
SHA256: 42CAB30E7F657C8B8C686F7305CE5C61D111992C04CCA3BED9 8DDB14BD7DCBC8

The installer does not create a desktop shortcut.
o So create your own shortcut & put it where it belongs
Note: You define where it belongs; not a million different developers.

C:\app\editor\pic\psp\psp.exe == C:\menu\editor\pic\psp.lnk
TARGET=C:\app\editor\pic\psp\psp.exe
STARTIN=C:\app\editor\pic\psp

If you have the "Send To" set up, use that to populate your menu:
o Rightclick on the shortcut Send To... C:\menu\editor\pic\psp.lnk

Which is attached to the taskbar as a foldout cascade accordion menu:
Taskbar menu editor pic psp.lnk

To create a Run command to start PSP, simply add this to your registry:
o [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths]
psp.exe=C:\app\editor\pic\psp\psp.exe
...or...
psp.exe=C:\menu\editor\pic\psp.lnk

Then test your new Run command:
o Win+R psp

Voila!
o https://i.postimg.cc/zv5SSTwn/psp01.jpg

Turn the gateway back on using option 2:
o Win+R network
(ption 1 route delete 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1
(ption 2 route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1

Post results to Usenet so that all benefit from every action taken on a PC.
o Ask if anyone knows the last known good version (to save effort for all).
--
PSP version 5.01 may not be the latest known good version; but it works.
NOTE: In general, freeware doesn't usually improve in newer versions.

Randomly, I had tried a _later_ version, which was a dismal failure.
o What is the latest known good version of JascSoftware PaintShopPro

Here's the syslog, which is kept for every install (over decades)...
....begin syslog...

Sat 10/24/2020
http://www.oldversion.com/windows/paint-shop-pro-9-0
Save to: X:\installer\editor\pic\psp\psp90.exe
Name: psp90.exe
Size: 113892104 bytes (108 MiB)
SHA256: 88C62A0C3265E0F3A06A3E6FEFDE91834B1C20416EA3C43EEE BAFB541C671B4C

Right click "Scan with Malwarebytes" == No threats detected

Kill the gateway.
Then doubleclick on psp90.exe

It asks "Save files in folder:"
The ungodly default folder location is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Jasc Software Inc\Setup Files\English PaintShopPro903 Jasc TRYANDBUY PCUESD

Change that to something less ungodly for heavens sake:
Save files in folder: c:\tmp\English PaintShopPro903 Jasc TRYANDBUY PCUESD

Then watch the dumb installer run.
Dumb installer - really dumb - doesn't even ask where it belongs.
(Any installer that doesn't ask - is usually not worth installing.)

Up pops a whole bunch of things, too fast to copy down.

Then it stops at a "Continue" button, saying at top: Paint Shop Pro 9 Trial
Hmmmmmmmm....... what good is a "trial" software?
That's worthless.

Plus, apparently, PSP won't even run if it's not on the Internet.
o The [Continue] button is grayed out.
o All that's left is [Cancel].

The three non-working options it describes a
1. Connect to Internet?
Connect to the Internet and sign-in to your Corel Account.

2. Working off-line?
Contact a Corel Customer Service representative in your area
to receive your trial serial number. 800-772-6735, 9:00am-7:00pm EST

3. Already have a Trial serial number?
Enter your trial serial number and choose Continue to proceed.

....end syslog...

It may be better to figure out the last known good version.
http://www.oldversion.com/windows/paint-shop-pro/

Does anyone know the last known good version that doesn't play tricks?

I use ver 7.2. It's cracked so you can simply copy it over to any pc and
run (only 41 Megs). Gives an access error you can fix by changing
permissions for some folder under Win7 (I think been so long) but still
starts and runs anyway. I've never had any problems wiht it in a decade
or so under numrous pcs. AND it does way more than I can deal with for
images.

Default What is the latest known good version of JascSoftware PaintShopPro [before it went to the dark side under Corel]?

Darn PaintShopPro version 5.01 adds a context menu to the recycle bin.
o Recycle Bin Browse with Paint Shop Pro

Since I no longer install ccleaner, I first tried Default Programs Editor
o http://defaultprogramseditor.com/

But it works on different context menus than the Recycle Bin.
o (It works on the "editing" of files.)

Then I tried Nirsoft "ShellEx View" http://www.nirsoft.net
o But that too didn't work on the recycle bin context menu

Thirdly, I tried Nirsoft "Shell Menu View"
o Which was only able to "disable" that errant Recycle Bin menu

Do you know if it's "safe" to simply remove this registry entry?
o [HKCR\Folder\shell\Browse with Paint Shop Pro\command]

Note: The Paint Shop Pro software also polluted the right click context
menu for *.psp files, and the "New File" context menu, both of which I'll
clean up separately, probably by using Nirsoft Shell Menu New.
o New PSP5 Browser File
o New Paint Shop Pro 5 Image

Default What is the latest known good version of JascSoftware PaintShopPro [before it went to the dark side under Corel]?

Solved: https://i.postimg.cc/zv5SSTwn/psp01.jpg
(all three/four technical questions, pending persistence after reboot)

Based on information posted today in alt.comp.freeware...

1. The latest known-good version of PSP is, most likely, version 5.01
http://www.oldversion.com/windows/download/paint-shop-pro-5-01
Name: 5.01_psp501.exe
Size: 18241961 bytes (17 MiB)
SHA256: 7D3ED18F0A6CF25C8F09F5241CA73A6E40599569ABEBFA3F1D BCCED614B058EB

Name: psp.exe
Size: 3632128 bytes (3547 KiB)
SHA256: 42CAB30E7F657C8B8C686F7305CE5C61D111992C04CCA3BED9 8DDB14BD7DCBC8

2. I disabled the PSP errant Recycle Bin context menu
Using Nirsoft "Shell Menu View" freeware
[HKCR\Folder\shell\Browse with Paint Shop Pro\command]

3. I disabled the PSP errant "New" menu with Nirsoft "Shell Menu New"
[HKCR\.psp\ShellNew]

4. I created a new custom context menu for editing "psp" files using
Default Programs Editor http://defaultprogramseditor.com/

In summary, psp version 5.01 is apparently successfully installed:
a. INSTALLER === x:\app\editor\pic\psp\{5.01_psp501.exe,syslog.log}
b. INSTALLED === c:\app\editor\pic\psp\psp.exe
c. SHORTCUT === c:\menu\editor\pic\psp\psp.lnk
d. MENU === Taskbar menu editor pic psp
e. APPPATH === [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths]
f. COMMAND === Win+R psp

2. One problem with this version is it adds unwanted menus:
