Default De Vere Tripod

I've just been given a large old tripod, it's marked 'De Vere Industrial
Stand' and the tilt/pan head has a large plate approx 3" x 6" for attaching
a camera, underneath this is "Gitzo France". The camera fixing bolt is
missing. It looks ideal for using with my Sinar or Toyo, as long as I don't
have to carry it far from the car. The head looks as if it's held on by a
bolt, completely different to my Benbo. Were these old tripods intended to
have interchangeable heads?

Any 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 bolt will work. Use a 'fender washer' and a
split lockwasher under the head of the bolt (or a regular washer
if a fender won't fit).

It is.

as long as I don't have to carry it far from the car.

The scene wasn't that photogenic anyway ...

The head looks as if it's held on by a bolt

Yes, and? Better than epoxy, yah? Yes, a bolt is
used to hold the head to the tripod/column/arm - sometimes
the bolt is fixed to the 'pod, sometimes it has a finger
knob on it, variations on a theme.

completely different to my Benbo.

Gitzos usually are. But then, most everything is different to
a Benbo.

Were these old tripods intended to have interchangeable heads?

Yes, they were.

And they still are.
