Standard Photoshop CS6 is US$699 = NZ$ 870.95
Photoshop CS6 Extended is US$999 = NZ$ 1,244.75

....and I know I have no need for CS6 Ext. I can't imagine that you would.

GIMP is still free.

Free, and after making the comparison with PS, it still sits unused on
my computer.
GIMP does a reasonable job for those who deny the functionality of
CS5/6, or those who insist of "free". You do get what you pay for.
After making the basic comparison and saying that they are both capable
of editing and adjusting image files, there is no contest. CS3/4/5/6
are all far superior to GIMP.

....but GIMP is "free".

NZD $1,000 = USD $801.34.

That's rather meaningless, though, without considering something like
how many hours a New Zealander would have to work at minimum wage to
earn NZD $1,000 compared to how many hours an American would have to
work at minimum wage to earn USD $801.

The minimum wage aspect is useful only to establish some means of
comparing earning power and cost of product.

Obviously, minimum wage earners are not the prime buyers of Photoshop.

I think there might be NZ customs and import duty to be considered.
However one would think there would be local distributers who could
import at wholesale from the US, to sell with a lower retail penalty
for the NZ purchaser.

I already have elements 10 - don't like it...

Thinking of going for CS6... (need to trade in E10 for the deal.)

That's a good deal if you need CS6. I have CS5 and no complaints.

I think you'll like Bridge which is included.

What don't you like about E10?

I was studying CS5 for quite a while, and learned quite a bit about editing
using LAB mode and all the other fancy bits, so now when I go to use E9 or E10
(I have both of those) I find I can't do what I want. For example, instead of an
Fx menu for layer styles, there are just a few icons to pick for factory set
bevels and shadows and things... far less control than I'd like! Actually, no
control, just pick something... it's software for neophytes and there p&s
cameras, not really serious stuff. I'm finally starting to take some decent
photos and enhance them with ACR and CS and want to go farther!

I've been using lots of different software, usually Micrographx until they went
out of business, and I bought Elements 2 and then 4. I bought a used PC with CS3
in it, but it had a problem and didn't work well. (probably why he sold it!)
This year I began studying CS5 on a family members machine, and liked it so much
I bought Elements 10 on sale, but discovered it is very limiting. Then I bought
a new Dell top-of-the-line computer (have had it a month now) and it came with
Elements 9... So I have lots of stuff to think about! I really should get CS6
and put it on the Dell I guess... but it's not on the net... everything has to
be connected today! (I have no help file in E10 because of the lack of
connection.)

Because Adobe retailers in the USA are not allowed to sell it to me
here in NZ. The retail price quoted in NZ is quoted in AU$ at AU$1186
which is US$1270.

download 1.1 GB CS6 for the US price of $699. If you want a hard copy
there is this note:

Is that for CS6 standard or CS6 Extended?

CS6 EX is US$ 999 which at today's rate equates at AU$ 965.33.
CS6 is US$ 699 or AU$ 675.44

So, if that is the quote for standard CS6, there is something rotten in
the "Land of Oz".
