While he's at it, he might consider the FM3a....It is a fine, solidly built,
professional, manual focus Nikon body that will take most all the newer
Nikon glass except the "G" types, and yet only costs about $500. Unless he's
hung up on a million electronic bells & whistles, it might be just the
thing....He could buy a fine pro lens (or two) with the money he
saves.......

What lenses are you looking to use? If you buy an F4 you will be able to
make use of pretty much any Nikon
lenses, including pre-AI manual focus, G type and AF-S. With AF-S lenses
the F4 becomes a very good AF body (not so hot with ordinary AF lenses).

As I uderstand it, the F4 has no idea what to do with an AFS lense.
Indeed, it is less "hot" on account of AF not working at all :-)

Shhhhh, don't tell that to my F4e, it AF's my Nikon AF-S lenses, not
lightning fast but quickly. G

nick

Also, G type lenses will only work in the Program modes; so no A,S, or M.

Cheers,

Proud F4s owner.

I believe that the F4 WILL focus with AF-S lenses. A bit of forward
compatibility. As for G lenses they work in P, Ph or S mode.

You understand wrong. All AF-S lenses will AF on an F4, even the DX lenses
(albeit with a weird kind of tunnelvision).

Also, G type lenses will only work in the Program modes; so no A,S, or
M.

I thought about that before I bought my 70-200mm G lens and decided that
on most occasions with that lens I would be looking for faster shutter
speeds, so Ph mode does me fine.

Proud F4s owner.

But not an AF-S owner?

For the time being ;-)

I stand corrected, and delighted.
Makes me lust after the AF-S wallet-unloaders even more so ;-)

Cheers,
