It is a set. The backgroounds have been painted. Softbox and some
grids.
I'd imagine film, as a lot of magazines still prefer to have color neg
shot.

Of course, its not "Waffle Boy", but evedentilly it is/was successful
for the magazine, which is part of the reason they did it like that.

I don't see why you're all so critical of this shoot. I mean, just look at
the emotion, the dynamics, the sense of pent-up desire to sing 'til the sun
fizzles out...

It does occur to me how much David Bowie looks like Dirty Den, though.

I never thought much of Bowie, not in any of his 'periods'.

not even during his 'i'm going to steal ideas from alice cooper and pass
them off as mine' period?

Almost. Young non-photographers buying "fashion posters."

Yes, but you must admit - whoever took the photos most likely got paid a
lot for the shots, unless they are an in-house photog.

i personally wasn't passing judgement on the photographer at all. with
bowie, i'm sure the photographer had limited say in the whole shoot.

and if i was paid enough to shoot him, i would. it would have to be a lo
though.

Everyone knows that the more you pay, the better the shots,

correct. and everyone knows the more money you have, the better chance you
can get away with murder (oj) and rape (bryant).

I think it's an umbrella or softbox plus grids. The ratio between them
is critical.
Personally I don't think they are bad photos. Some are over contrived
but photos # 1,2, & 5 are OK.

what on Earth is "Waffle Boy" and was some faint streaking on the background
caused by the way it was painted and/or by some kind of grid spots or both?

TIA

Lewis
