Default Home made back

I've made my first back for my Ansco. It's basically just 1/4"
hardboard cut to size with the ground glass and springs from my old back.
For a first hack it's not bad. I need a better method for cutting the
opening. and 1/4" seems just a little too thin. I figure a little shim and
it should be okay. Simple cheap and it looks like it works-)

Measure three times cut twice.

This afternoon I brought six 8x10 wood backs in from storage and I have a
few more elsewhere. If you want to shoot me the size you need, maybe we can
save you some trouble. All but one are step-downs to 5x4.

But that's the thing. It only took me 10 minutes. If I had a jigsaw it
would have taken less-) I could certainly use a 4x5 graflok back. I've got
the parts for making a 4x5 spring back but I'm going to use the current 5x7
for awhile first. Learn how it needs to be improved.

Only disappointment with my new back is it's only about 1" thinner then
the old one. I was hoping for a little more. Still it's an improvement.

I'd be concerned about getting the ground glass properly distanced for the
film holder, but then many of the 'original' old backs were right-on,
either. Wood changes over time.

But we are here for you, Nick! If you get stuck, send me a note. You can
have a back for the cost of shipping.
