Default Nikon D200 extra battery

I just ordered a Nikon D200, but I wanto to get an extra battery or two for
it.

Are any of the off-brands any good or should I stick with getting an extra
Nikon?

I don't know if any of the off brands are any good, but for what you just
spent on the D200, is it really worth taking the chance. I'd just get Nikon
batteries personally.

DON'T get a Ritz/Wolf store brand. I got one for my D70 & it died in a
few months. They replaced it happily & that one died in a few weeks. But
other people have reported good luck with other 3rd party batteries. I
keep waiting for the D200 battery price to drop... ah OK Amazon lists
them at $34.90 that's not bad... they were over $40 for a looong time.
Still $45 at B&H.

After having several of the off-brands overheat or lose their charge on
other Nikon cameras I do not get them any more.

I don't know about the off-brands; I have two genuine Nikons for my D70.
But (based on my experience with my D70) don't get more than one extra.
Unless you're using a huge amount of built-in flash, a single battery
charge lasts a long time.

Put me down for not having troubles with a third party battery, either
from a Ritz camera store in town or from B&H. The Nikon battery appears
to hold the charge a bit longer, though.

A D200 with VR lenses & raw+fine jpeg can eat batteries fairly quick.
But yes unless you have a lot of memory cards and are going off the grid
for days, it's not a problem. One battery will fill several 2GB cards
with everything turned on & a good deal of LCD reviewing. The D70 lasts
forever compared to a P&S which has the LCD lit up all the time, it's
not a big deal at all from that perspective. I used to have a hell of
time conserving batteries with my P&S. The D200 is noticeably more
battery-hungry but still not nearly as bad as a P&S.

For my D50 I bought an off brand for about £15 ($30 to you) on ebay.
No troubles thus far, though I do START shooting with the off brand
and when that runs out switch to the Nikon original as I *know* pretty
much how long it will last. i.e. if the off brand starts playing up
i'd rather still have a known level of charge after that point IYSWIM

I bought the $17 one offered on the D200 accessories tab at B&H. Works
fine--I notice no performance difference between it and the Nikon.

Given the recent hulabaloo with massive battery recalls (laptops,
mobile phones) everywhere, I don't think I'll purchase off-brand or
used batteries anymore. The possible savings are not worth the trouble
if even one battery burns rapidly while in close proximity of your
face.
