keyboards are a very subjective thing, and not finding one in a store
to test makes it a bit difficult to see if its satisfactory. and if the
thinkpad is so wonderful, why don't stores carry it?

Dunno what the GP is talking about, since thinkpads seem to be sold in
stores around here.

[and they are very very nice physically, tho they generally seem to have
been getting worse since Lenevo took over]

Lenovo has of course been building them since well before the buyout,
which included the people who designed and supported them, and I'd
personally say the T6x, T400 and T500 are better than earlier T-series
machines.

Haven't looked at them lately. Do they still have the classic
mid-keyboard nipple-mouse? (I much prefer those over the touch pads.)

The one I have as a loaner has both.

It would seem so.
The current Thinkpad models all seem to have both a touchpad and a
nipple-mouse.

I quite like the little joystick as well, but the touchpad has "mouse"
buttons and a scroll-wheel.

That's good for video where brightness tends to be similar in large
blocks, but less useful for photographs that tend to have sharp
contrast boundaries.

No, actually it works well in all cases (see my other followup), due to
the clever signal processing and properties of the human eye.

Bull****.

Yes, that's true in theory. But - by necessity - LED backlighting is
only in blocks, rather than per pixel, so your shadows are likely to be
blotchy. (Imagine JPEG artifacting, only bigger!)

Argh, well, see my other responses about this...

Both trackpoint and touchpad, together or selectable, the best of both
worlds.

In my opinion, the worst of any world. I plug in a mouse with my
laptop. Can't stand to be dicking around with a touch pad.

Agreed.

At home I use a Logitech Trackman Wheel with my Macbook Pro.

Looks good. Probably better than "GORONE RETURNS!" (Gorone means "lazy
afternoon nap") Which is a tad fiddly.

But don't miss "GORONE RETURNS, THE MOVIE!"

"GORONE GIRL?"
Talk about different commercial cultures.

I'll stick with the Trackman.
