There is (or rather was) a market. That hasn't been the problem.
(And even if, it certainly wouldn't be because of the multitude of back
mounts.
Speaking of which, remember the multitude of 35 mm format camera's lens
mounts and the cheapest lines of third party 35 mm format lenses? Those that
came in versions to fit any imaginable 35 mm format camera? Didn't make them
too expensive, did it?)

The problem has been that first the products offered were way too expensive,
and then (while still too expensive) offered too little compared to the
non-MF competition.
People buy MPixs. And unless the MPs produced by a MF back are considerably
better, they shouldn't be considerably more expensive.
Remember too that MF (while not as "bad" as LF) is not the "convenience
format". So if there's no advantage, why bother?

But we're asked to pay more, work harder, and not get very much better
quality, if at all.
That's the thing that is wrecking the potential and real market: we're
simply not getting what we want.
