Funny you should mention that. Just the other day, I was down at the local OSH for some bolts. Another guy observed to the young lady helping him with a purchase decision, "You sure have a great range of stuff here." To which she replied, "Yep -- everything you want and nothing you need." :-) That reminds me of the techno-toy catalogues that come in magazines; full of things I never knew I did not need. Yes, that's been a painful gap in my own education. I have to go to all sorts of toy houses for therapy. Help may be found at http://www.thinkgeek.com -- I particularly recommend http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/tools/6b3b/ -- it should take your mind off the harshness of this worldfor a full fifteen minutes. And it even has a USB interface to satisfy Jeremy's fondest dream. |

Are you sure? I believe I heard years ago that it defined only signal levels (and maximum supported distance criteria for copper) for 25 lines and was otherwise connector-agnostic. I may well be wrong -- it happened once. A long time ago. I think you could be right, it was along time ago for me also. I just did a bit of research, it seems it was originally a nine wire system. Yes, in a 25 pin connector. Wonder why... The 9-pin connector came later. Because of the remaining signals not normally required for simple communications. Nine (or fewer) pins are probably adequate for 95% of what's done with serial comms. |
