Stuck in the 1970s, FF shooters go mad
Amusing, reading some of the nitwit comments about this camera on Dpreview
and pro sites. So Hasselblad brings out an "entry level" 40 megapixel camera with a larger than 35mm sensor and the FF shooters go insane, saying it's too expensive, and doesn't make sense to bring out a medium format camera with a smaller than standard sensor. They don't get it. The idea isn't to downgrade current top medium format offerings, it is to convince some luddite 35mm FF shooters to get out of their current, ancient mindset that says you have to stick to 35mm that a fixed format like that makes any sense in this day and age. We are no longer bound to film formats. That died with film. They can now make digital sensors in any format, any size they like, it's just up to those who buy them to use them. I think the real reason some of them are upset is that they were unrealistically expecting something for around $9-$10k, and it isn't happening. They'll have to wait for the Pentax (if it ever comes out) or other digital medium format to be that cheap. http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk...sselblad_H4D40 _DSLR_camera_update_news_294573.html |

Some people whine when it's too expensive. Some people whine when it's too cheap. Some people whine when the sensor is too big. Some whine when it's too small. They don't get it. No, "they" don't. -- Ray Fischer |

some blather, snipped The real nugget of interest in there was the contention that this 40 Mpix camera would be a threat to the Leica S2. H4D-40: $20K (Incl. 80mm lens) 40 Mpix (44x33 [4:3]), No A-A. ($24K with a second lens, say a wide-angle 28mm f/4 or 100mm f/4 macro). Leica S2: $23K (no lens), 37.5 Mpix (45x32mm [3:2]), No A-A. ($28K with a 70mm f/2.5 lens). Other costs of ownership of the 'blad (esp. getting a set of Fujinon lenses) would be cheaper than Leica. For example, the Leica with one FFL lens: $28K. the Hassy with three FFL lenses: $28K. Hasselblad are going to eat Leica's cheese on this one - other than the very well heeled shooter or pros with particular needs. Certainly there is a lot to say for Leica's fine lenses, they are probably better than the Fujinon's of the Hassy. But by enough to matter to most pros who need to turn in work and manage a capital budget? Hardly. (You can also adapt older V series Carl-Zeiss lenses to the Hassy and these are in abundant supply). As to sensor format, just grow up. It has never really mattered (other than special cases like wide pano) and matters even less today other than what is tied to lens output. That's what determines the marketing decisions. -- gmail originated posts are filtered due to spam. |
