Default NEED ADVISE ON NEW DIGITAL CAMERA PLEASE READ

I am looking to purchase a new digital camera. I will be mostly
taking action shots of Indoor soccer and outdoor soccer games.

the camera I have now is a fuji that I love, and does well for outdoor
but indoor, the shots are always blurry and the coloring is all off.

anyone have success in taking indoor action shots with the natural
lighting ( no flash) they don't want flashes going on when the kids
are playing soccer.

thanks in advance for your help.

I was currently research the fuji finepix s5200 and the canon power
shot s3 Is

Have you tried setting the white balance and setting shutter speed on
your fuji.

They're similar cameras, but each uses a different method of
dealing with low light. The S3 IS has IS (obviously), but while
it's very useful for some types of shots, it wouldn't help too much
for kids playing soccer. It works by reducing handheld camera
movement, and that allows you to use a longer shutter speed. But
that exacerbates the problem of stopping the movement of the
players. The Fuji S5200's sensor is probably more able to allow
higher ISOs to be used, so it could get the same exposure as the S3
IS without having to slow down the shutter speed. I'll just add, in
case you aren't already aware of it, that if you *really* want the
best low light capability, you'll have to get a DSLR. The smaller
ones such as Canon's 350D and Nikon's D50, even when used with a
lens *not* providing IS (or VR for Nikon's lenses) would be much
more able to reduce the blur of moving athletes because they should
allow much higher ISOs to be used. They'll also avoid the larger
shutter lag that P&S cameras have, which often cause missed shots.
The DSLRs will cost more of course, but as new models are being
introduced as we speak, you might be able to find some of the older
models getting discounted. If you think that you may go this route,
there are many DSLR owners here that can suggest the best lens to
select.

The Canon S3 should not be considered. It focuses very slow. Depending
on money, the Canon 5D is the best since it is full frame and can
produce results with minimum noise at high ISO which is great for action
photos.

You are not going to like the answer, but: look at what professional
sports photographers use. They face the same problem you do, and they
solve it with enormous, multi-kilobuck cameras and lenses. There
really isn't a much better solution at the moment, if you need high
quality results.

Well, you could certainly scrape by with, say the Canon 30D or 400D, not
that they are at all shabby! Both have superior high ISO performance.

I'd use a short, fast lens, and do some cropping on most frames. And
tell the precious little soccer coaches that flash isn't fatal.

But unless you're going to get right in their faces or use a HUGE flash
set-up, flash isn't going to be much use shooting soccer matches anyway.

I have played around a bit with it, but not totally understanding their
roles in the picture taking process, I don't know where to start.

I was looking at the SLR's but just not in my budget, I just need
something that will do the job ( especially the indoor soccer) for
under $400

Everybody knows that if you want to do low light photography or to use
very high shutter speeds and have some decent depth of field you need a
high ISO. The Canon 5D, being full frame, have large and higher quality
pixels that will produce less noise at high ISO's. This has been proven
by people I know who switched from a Nikon D70s to a Canon 5D and
noticed vast improvements due to decreased noise at high ISO. And he
loved the Nikon.

Can you take a tripod in? Indoor shots typically take longer exposure.
Long exposure requires a tripod. Otherwise you get motion blur
because your hand cannot hold the camera steady enough. This is true
even if there is no movement on the playing field.

Tripods can be obtained relatively inexpensively these days.
