How big could I print this?
William Graham wrote:
Exactly....So the question, "How big can I blow up a 35 mm slide?" is really meaningless....It depends on how far away the observer is, and/or on how good the vision of the observer is...... I think "meaningless" is a bit far in the other direction. It's another part of the subjective equation, albeit not as critical. |

Well, by "meaningless", I mean there is not enough information to adequately answer the question. Life is full of examples of this....Just watch the TV ads for a few minutes.....I think that if I hear them say on Animal Planet, or some such place, "The shark can bite down with tons and tons of force" one more time, I will go ballistic....Why doesn't the general population understand the difference between force and pressure? - It's such a simple concept...... |

How big could I print this?

Ok, I have someone who wishes to purchase a photo of mine to frame on his wall. He desires to have it printed as large as possible. I'm sure there is a limit of some kind, but he said as large as possible. As others have said, there is no limit. Yes, it depends to some extent on some obvious factors, like: - quality of the original - is it really pin-sharp? Images can look ok via a cheap loupe or projector, but when enlarged may reveal blurring or o-o-f problems. - quality of the scan (or optical enlargement process) - if it is a truly nailed Kodachrome, it will probably benefit from *more* than 4000 ppi. Have you considered a drum scan, or just a higher res scanner like the Minolta 5400's? BUT, as others have mentioned, *image content* is possibly the most important factor, imo. Does it invite close scrutiny, like a detailed landscape with lots of foliage or grass, or is it a 'stand-back' sort of image, like a close-up portrait or flower macro? That's the killer, and will largely determine the size at which it falls apart. Images without fine detail, or with large geometric areas of colours, will enlarge *much* more than those with lots of fine information that draws the viewer up close. May I suggest that you experiment, by printing a crop of a representative area of the image on your Canon at various sizes? Note that the *way* you enlarge it is critical - I strongly suggest you invest in QImage (is the demo version still available, maybe?) and use it to do the enlarging/printing using one of its better algorithms (vector, pyramid or the new one - 'hybrid' I think it's called). Let us know how you get on. By the way, it is worth noting that the answers provided by Douglas were indeed excellent. Bravo, Doug, keep that up! |

Anyway, the image is from a 35mm slide (Kodachrome 64, I think, but I forget for sure, I'd have to look) scanned on a Nikon Coolscan 9000 at 4000ppi. I have a Canon i9900 printer, which will do up 13x19, but I think I'd prefer to have a professional actually do the printing. Can anyone suggest a rough idea what might be a size limit for a good print? Also, I have never sold anything before (never tried), so I don't know how much to even charge. But, I'm more concerned about size and quality first. These are the largest I've done with 6MP D70: http://www.edgehill.net/1/?SC=go.php&DIR=Misc/photography/framing/2006-05-17-final&PG=1&PIC=1 about 30x30 lightjets. Notice they are placed high on the wall behind furniture so you don't look at them up close. |

Office in a crummy makeshift warehouse building. Tall ceiling though. |

Ah well, believe what you wish. I'm just trying to be more mellow these days.. By the way, I should clarify... The very nice soaring pelican image I am referring to is *this* one: http://www.canvasphotos.com.au/_private/bkgrnd-dex.png You can't really tell from that canvas-textured image, but I seem to recall the original looked pretty good. Nice shot. Could use a little more control of those highlights in the clouds though... I'm definitely NOT referring to this one: http://www.annika1980.com/D-Macs/blurry-what.htm which you completely blew out of the water, and pretty much sucks... (O; And I even quite like your b&w pelican/seagull thing he http://www.annika1980.com/D-Macs/monochrome-digital.htm ...although the comments that go with it are a little o-t-t, the framing treatment doesn't add much, and is that dodging/burning that has caused a hot-spot? The seagulls in the centre are blown, yet others appear greyed out... Once again - attention to detail, D.M.... |

The biggest I've printed without losing quality is about 24x36 and that shot was taken with a 6.0 mega pixel Canon Powershot, believe it or not. Most professional printers are quite good, but you can get a better deal if you find someone online you can trust. You simply email them your jpeg and they send you the print. This can be 1/3 cheaper than getting it done at print shop. Good luck! John www.johnkenneyink.com |
