Sorry for replying to such an ancient post (by usenet standards),
but nobody offered what I think is the better solution to this
question. One of the most valuable renaming tools I've found,
especially for digital photo files is RenameMaster. It even allows
using any of 89(?) different EXIF data tags to be used in the
file-renaming options.

It's 100% freeware.

Don't let the name of the site upset you, he means well, and does a
fine job of providing some excellent free utilities. I just tried
another of his free utilities "arsclip" and it does more than most
other clipboard monitors and catalogers I've tried.
