Default Raw plugin

Why doesn't Photoshop CS have a raw plugin for the Digital Rebel XT?
I think it sucks that you have to upgrade to a newer version of
Photoshop to get it. Is Adobe owned by Bill Gates? This sounds like
something he would do.

Because the Digital Rebel XT didn't exist when Photoshop CS was made.

You can download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert your RAW files
to DNG, and then Photoshop CS will open them just fine.

Why blame Adobe? Canon could have used a raw format that CS handled.
(DNG).

Just Upgrade. CS2 is a better product.

Adobe's upgrade path was ok with me until now. I have upgraded since
Photoshop 4, but now it looks like CS3 is on the way from the
rumblings I hear on the internet. 3 new versions in about 2
years...it might be time to stop and make sure I really need it before
I buy.

I have a Rebel D300 and CS opened my raw images fine. I am pretty sure
the format has not changed. Are they still .RAW? If they are, go to the
file menu and select "Browse...", find your image and open it.

And if you are using window you have no reason to complain about Gates.

The file format has changed since the 300D/Rebel that is the problem.

You could either blame Canon for changing the format, or Adobe for forcing
users to upgrade to CS2 instead of just making the new format available to
CS users.

Yes, blame Canon. No, don't blame Adobe.

Just download the free version-3.1 DNG Converter from the Adobe
website, convert those Raw files to DNG, and continue to use CS & ACR
2.4.

(Hm! It is rather rare that a company provides free software to enable
you to avoid upgrading to the next version of their product! Name
another example).

CS2 to me had enough new features to make worth while.

I am considering upgrading, but before I do, I thought I'd ask. What are
some of the new features that you find useful?

Go to www.pixmantec.com and download their processor. It is free and much
better anyway.

Camera Raw 3 is enough of an improvement alone to make it worth upgrading.
Frankly, it almost turns Photoshop into a plug-in for Camera Raw. 90% of
my shots don't need to be touched in Photoshop proper at all now, aside
from the routine stuff like color space conversion, resizing, sharpening,
saving JPEGs and whatnot.

The "Merge to HDR" function is useful. Bridge is really nice. And the
extent of the scripting API is very impressive.
