Default 35mm B/W internegative advice

Can I ask some advice please? What film (35mm) would people use for
making an internegative of a black/white transparency?

I am supposing that what works well for making B&W negatives
from colour slides, should also work for B&W slides. In which
case you need both fine grain and low contrast. Normal development
will give you a rather hard negative.

Could I use any old fine-grain B/W film such as Pan-F+?

Yes. But it is possible that you may find it a bit tricky to
get even, low contrast development. Ilford recommends FP4+
film for making internegatives. If you are prepared to make
your internegative on sheet film, grain will not be a problem.
(Ilford makes Ortho+ sheet film which is basically an orthochromatic
version of FP4+ which can be handled under a Wratten#2 safelight.)

Eastman 5234 cine internegative film exists, and may seem
ideal for the purpose, but is hard to obtain in modest quantities.

I would suggest also asking in rec.photo.darkroom. It seems almost
dead, but a good question can get Richard Knoppow out of the
woodwork, and he is always worth reading.

Peter.
