Default Kodak ups stakes in mediocrity war

War of the superzooms. Where will it end? 100x zoom, like some video
cameras? I like how they like to play "pro camera" with the lens body 2x
the actual diameter of the lens elements and the "detachable grip."
Now, P&S's can pretend they have Canon 1DsMkIII's!!!
Hours of fun!
And, if you are willing to wait 8 months, it'll go from $700 down to $150
like the 880 did!

The new KODAK Z980 Digital Camera offers:

* Kodak’s exclusive Smart Capture feature, which analyses scenes and
adjusts camera settings to deliver beautiful pictures more often;
* 26 mm wide angle/24X Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon Image Stabilised
Optical Zoom Lens;
* HD picture and video capture;
* Vertical shutter release and detachable vertical grip, for greater
comfort and control when shooting scenes vertically;
* Hot shoe for the optional KODAK P20 flash;
* 12 MP for prints up to 30”x40”;

The market will of course decide, to the great consternation of those
who think they're smarter than everyone else.

I tried to convince someone not to buy the predecessor to this Kodak
model, the Z1015, to no avail. Shortly afterward, she admitted that it
sucked in terms of solving one of her main complaints about her older
Nikon P&S, the AF lag.

I guess there's a market for these ZLRs to people that are somehow
terrified of taking the plunge to a D-SLR, but invariably the owners of
these ZLRs end up being disappointed with the results. Read the reviews
of these ZLR cameras, as well as the user comments, and it's clear that
they're being market to unsophisticated buyers that shop based on LCD
size, megapixels, and zoom range, rather than on image quality. Perhaps
there's nothing wrong with that, except the manufacturers never admit
the limitations.

The vertical grip is just too funny.

What clear is that you have neither clue nor direct experience, and so
have to rely on regurgitating what you read on the Internet.

I want a zoom like NASA uses for shuttle launches.

for about $800, sounds about right.

Or should I be asking Sanyo, the ones who actually make their cheap
stuff?

Sanyo is actually the largest manufacturer of digital cameras.

ROTFL!

Kodak's previous foray into D-SLRs used the Fill Factory sensor which
was poor. They have no sensor to put into another D-SLR, nor any lenses
to attach to their D-SLR unless they go and make Nikon and Canon
compatible bodies again. Which of course is why they do stuff like the
Z1015 and why Panasonic does stuff like the FZ8; they need to have
something to sell into the consumer space at the higher end, and it
can't be a D-SLR.

Pure and complete rubbish.

Whether or not he's right, you're the perfect example to prove his
point. You bought an FZ8 and you said that image quality is
meaningless.

Nothing of the sort, and really really lame -- surely you can do better
than that.

Why is it that John makes blanket statements like these, yet he often
regurgitates selected parts of camera reviews from the net when he
wants to prove his points?

Interesting, isn't it?
