Sometimes stupid loses

In California, they say, "Union membership is not required in this state.", but they deduct the union dues from your paycheck, so even though you don't have to be a member, you have to pay the union their dues anyway. If that isn't "doublespeak" then I don't know what is. There is no way that there can be a deduction from a check for union dues if the person receiving the check has not joined the union. At some point, anyone with anything deducted from their check has authorized that deduction. Not quite, but this is an usual case: my wife is a school teacher. She is a member of her local union whose sole responsibility is to conduct union business (no politicizing, no donations to candidates, etc.). The teachers are also members of NYSUT, the NY State Teacher's Union. Whena deduction is made from their paychecks, a portion of that goes to NYSUT. To our knowledge, my wife is the only public school teacher in New York who is not a member of NYSUT. She was finally able to withdraw her membership in NYSUT after a long fight. She was stonewalled for over a year by her local union and then by NYSUT. It took the work of an attorney from the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation to make it happen. My wife's objection to staying a member is that her dues are going to NYSUT to support issues and candidates that she doesn't. She is not given a choice nor are the members asked who they would like the union to support. She is now officially no longer a member of NYSUT. Still, the deduction is made from her paycheck for the NYSUT dues as it always was but it now goes towards a charity that she chooses but must be approved by NYSUT and her local union. Why should she be forced to still have that deduction made? She has chosen "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep" as the charity and the union takes the credit for making the donation. It's not as if my wife is looking for recognition from the chairty, but it was difficult to confirm that they were actually sending the donation since the charity never had and record of getting it in my wife's name. That is a really rotten arrangement. The scheme is such that your wife is being PUNISHED, plain and simple, because she chooses not to be a member of the state union. And as you say, her forced donation to the charity cannot even be confirmed. Why should the union even be involved in such a transfer in the first place? Really, really rotten. Your wife's case should be made a textbook example of how these unions operate. |
