Default Bird ID .... Help!

"Jerry Avins" wrote

A 400 mm cannon is a whopping big gun! Seriously, that's a whopping big
lens. I have a 500 mm mirror lens for my Minolta, fixed f/8, but it's
probably harder to hold it steady than your longer, heavier lens. You use
it superbly.

Remember the 400 mm f/6.3 preset lenses that cost, what, about $40 way back
when? I forget... Never saw one, and wonder if they were any good.

My grandfather, who lived in Bruce Mines, had a pet wild crow. I
guess that's where I get my love for birds.

I grew up hating birds. Blame Hitchcock.
Now I find myself spending a lot of time photographing them.
I used to shoot them with a Crosman or a slingshot.
Now I use a Canon.

Try a sigma 50-500 Bigma....makes my arm ache after carrying it on a
Canon 5D for a couple hours.

My Celestron C5 functions as a 1250 mm f/10 alone or a 788 f/6.3 with
the field flattener. The tripod weighs 12 pounds, the mount another 10.

My old Criterion Dynascope RV-6 is also 1250mm @f/8.
Kinda tough to track flying birds with, but you can set a nickel on a
street sign a block away and read the date on it.

Don't have the field flattener Jerry but my Celestron 130 SLT is
comparable in size and weight....and when I add the power back to
support it, the inverter, the laptop AND the Camera...ugh.

I've been chasing these guys for months, but finally got a good shot
of one yesterday in a magnolia tree.

Any ID help will be greatly appreciated.

As said, a Northern Flicker. We have them at our cabin, and they are a
fascinating bird.
