Please point me to a utility to add location EXIF data
Hi,
I need to associate location data from my GPS to photoes (often many for one location). I see plenty of talk on the web about this but can't tell if there is one solution that beats others. Tips and pointers would be appreciated. Thanks MattB |

One is to simply keep a notebook and note the GPS readings when you take each photo. Then when you get the photos home you can put the data from the notebool into the note section of the EXIF. Another is to use a logging GPS and syncronize the clock in the camera with the GPS. Then there is a program for your computer that checks the GPS log for the time of each photo and automatically includes the GPS data in the EXIF. Lastly I have heard that there are a very few (high end) cameras that are able to plug into specific brand/models of GPS which (with a small upgrade of the camera software) will store the GPS data with every photo. There are probably other ways but these three are (in order of cost) the ones I know of. So depending on how much you are willing to spend to get the right equipment will define what will be best for you. I have also heard rumors that there is (or soon will be) a camera with a built in GPS. But I have no specific solid info on this. Maybe someone else will. Do you have a GPS unit? If so, what brand? Many solutions allow you to
upload a track file from the GPS unit to your PC and then automate the process. Of course, they depend on your digital camera's clock being pretty closely sync'd to your GPS unit time setting. I like RoboGeo http://www.robogeo.com/, commerical and constantly improving. A lot of people are happy with a free and unsupported Microsoft product called "WWMX Location Stamper". It works fine for me too. Note that both of the above solutions will only read Garmin track files or a variety of neutral format files. If you have a Magellan or other brand, you will need a file converter -- there are many freeware solutions. Converting proprietary formats to GPX format seems to be the most popular way now. Googling "geocoding" will give you lots of hits. "mberigan" wrote in message . net... Hi, I need to associate location data from my GPS to photoes (often many for one location). Sorry folks! I wasn't clear. I have the coordinates. I want some means
to make that data part of my fotos and I'll happily do it at my computer. I just want to be able to load the collected data from my Garmin etrex using some tool to associate it easily. Let me try this way; if I have 350 fotos from one site I want a tool that attaches that data to EXIF data (and I once saw a data field for "location" but it doesn't show on the fotos I'm taking with my Canon Rebel. I have *heard* that things like the Photoshop Bridge will allow one to sort through fotos by EXIF data - now if I could only afford Photoshop..... But the real point is that in 10 years when I try to find a picture by location reference - sort of like http://outside.in associates event data to location and events are discovered by location. Also google earth applications would be very cool - and I hear that flickr.com uses geotagged fotos - choose picture by location. I think I need a tool that let's me put lat & long data into the foto....... Steve Chesney wrote: Do you have a GPS unit? If so, what brand? If you want to do it manually, including batch, there is a freeware program called EXIF Editor that will allow you to add new tags, including most GPS info, into the individual photo's metadata. It does require Microsoft's .NET Framework 1.1 (or higher) to run. It can be found at: http://www.kiwiczech.net/?ref=EXIFeditor I use it myself, though not for GPS info. -- jimbok |

RoboGEO will support manually editing the coordinates into the EXIF header.
If you already have a Garmin, using the track files from that in RoboGEO will save you a lot of typing in future. Maybe you can still get these coordinates from your GPS unit. I'm told Photoshop Elements 5.0 will do that too. "mberigan" wrote in message news Sorry folks! I wasn't clear. I have the coordinates.
